Stop Killing Us

We’d been talking about it since March. Then a few days ago, Moo and I read the same articles: Police were being denied vacation time in Louisville.

“You know what’s about to pop off don’t you Moo?” I asked him. He replied. “Yep. Plus they gave her family all that money. It’s about to get ugly.”

Last night, we sat down as a family. We encouraged Moo to speak his mind and share his feelings. “I am forming my political and social views in the midst of chaos.” He went on to share his opinions and feelings, but that one statement stood out to me.

I wonder how these events will contribute to his adulthood and development? At the age of 17, he knows he’s among a group of people discounted, hunted for sport, marginalized and otherwise abused.

Educated.
Illiterate.
Sleep.
Awake.
Compliant.
Fighting.
Poor.
Wealthy.
Sober.
Addict.
Suburbs.
Hood.

It doesn’t matter. We’re targets. Moo is DEFINITELY a target. And we have to buffet him as much as we can from the vicarious trauma that is America…..
