Lately, I have made up in my mind that I would work on not being so easily offended, be less defensive, and have more empathy. So, as it usually goes in KP’s World, when I say I’m going to improve in an area, I am IMMEDIATELY given an opportunity to improve. A person made a comment in my presence yesterday, and the look on her face when she saw the look on my face clearly let me know that she is accustomed to saying what she wants to say without too much of a filter. The Old Ruth Holley (she’s kinder and gentler now lol) rose up in me, ready to be released with some “nice nasty” words. But I surprised myself by not responding in a negative way. All I said was, “You’re very entertaining”, and returned to my focus. When I got home, I was talking to Paul about it and laughing, which is also a change for me (I usually stew in situations like this) and then a “Ruthism” hit me and made me laugh harder – “Baby, the next time you are offended by someone, just look at them, really look at them, and 9 times out of 10, you won’t be offended anymore.” True words of wisdom – thanks ma!!!
